Are the Martial Arts for me?

What etiquette and rules should I know about?

  • no shoes or socks on the mat
  • keep your personal hygiene super clean (clean body and hair, short nails...etc.)
  • you are encouraged to ask questions if you don’t understand something
  • when the instructor calls "TIME", you must stop, listen and watch with your full attention
  • when drilling with your partner, do the technique ascribed by the instructor and not something different

There are lots of other little common sense rules and observations you’ll pick up along the way which are all part and parcel of participating in a happy, productive training environment

Is it dangerous?

Injuries are sometimes an unfortunate consequence of any sporting activity and jiujitsu is no exception. Thankfully, with safe training practices and observance of rules, risks are reduced to a minimum. Even in competitions, modern research has indicated that jiujitsu is one of the safest sports ever!

What's the deal with the coloured belts?

Starting in jiu-jitsu, you will wear a white belt. As your skill in the art progresses you will be graded up to blue, purple, brown and finally the black belt.

Can I compete?

You most certainly can. Discuss more with your instructor!

Can I use jiujitsu to defend myself?

Absolutely! Jiu-jitsu was originally devised as a self defence style and while the sport side has grown by leaps and bounds, here at Tokei Martial Arts we keep the self defence heritage very much alive.
